Today at roughly 02:00 pm (GMT), the Beam mainnet has launched. This makes Beam the first Mimblewimble implementation to have a working mainnet.
So, what to expect? Mimblewimble based coins kind of split the communities. While some attribute them a lot of hype potential for 2019 (I certainly do), others are less euphoric. Things like a lack of addresses, as we’re used from Bitcoin and nearly any other cryptocurrency, or the need for both parties of a transaction to be online simultaneously are cited as main reasons for doubt.
For what it’s worth, these new kinds of coins do fill a gap. Alone the enormous scalability potential is a big plus worth exploring. Other than that, coins like Monero (XMR) and Zcash (XZC) have proven that there’s a need for privacy coins in the realms of cryptocurrency. So, with scalability added to the privacy features, it’s very likely that coins like Beam and Grin will get a solid spot on CoinMarketCap.
Speaking of market cap: I bet it won’t take long until the first exchanges will announce support for Beam. So, stay tuned – I will update this post as soon as I’m aware of a listing!
